At Ascent Tutors, we pride ourselves in offering a wide variety of tutoring and test prep services. While most students in the New York area think of the SAT as the king of college entrance exams, another test exists that is just as broadly accepted. The ACT originally started as a competitor to the SAT in 1956, and in 2011 it finally edged out the SAT in terms of raw number of test-takers, with 1.666 million students to the SAT’s 1.664 million. What this means for students and parents looking for tutoring, whether in New York or elsewhere, is that ACT tutoring can be just as beneficial as SAT tutoring.

The original reasons the ACT’s founder, Everett Franklin Lindquist, had for designing a competing test to the SAT are too complex to go into fully here. Suffice it to say, for the moment, that it was originally intended more to test “practical knowledge” than it was to test “natural reasoning.” The ACT originally had four sections: Mathematics, Social Studies, English, and Natural Sciences. Over the years, it has evolved to the current four sections (with an optional fifth): Mathematics, Science Reasoning, Reading (with a Social Sciences subsection), and English. Students also have the option of adding a Writing section to the test, and many if not most colleges that accept the ACT also require students to take the Writing section as well.

One of the biggest differences between the ACT and the SAT is that on the ACT there is no penalty for answering a multiple-choice question incorrectly. The scoring is also different – on the ACT, students are graded on a scale of one to thirty-six on each subsection. The four subsections are then averaged to provide a composite score. While New York has its own system – the notorious Regents – many states also require all high school students (college-bound or not) to take the ACTs as a way of assessing overall school performance. The ACT has historically been more popular in the Midwest and the South, but in recent years it has been challenging the dominance of the SAT on both the West and East Coasts, including New York. Some students who find the SATs especially challenging or unfriendly the first time around may find that with a course of tutoring from Ascent Tutors, the ACTs can provide a more friendly experience. This is not to say that they are easier, simply that some students, for whatever reason, prefer one to the other. At Ascent Tutors, we search for the best of the best to make sure that you or your children have the best tutoring possible. Test prep tutoring can be especially nerve-wracking, but a skilled tutor like the ones we provide can make a world of difference, both in reducing the overall stress of the process and also in achieving the results you are looking for. So don’t delay – call Ascent tutors today.
